IN MEMORY OF SSGT JAMES V. DORSEY

 

SSgt James V. Dorsey, Jr. was killed in action 5 February 1969, when the EC-47 aircraft

            on which he was serving as an Airborne Morse Systems Operator , was downed by enemy

            fire over Laos.

 

            SSgt Dorsey was born 1 December 1945, in Washington D.C., and graduated from

            Archbishop Catholic High School in 1963.  SSgt Dorsey enlisted in the Air Force 4

            November 1965. He completed basic training at Lackland AFB, and Morse code

            training at Keesler AFB, Mississippi.  SSgt Dorsey was then assigned to the 6918th

            Security Squadron, Hakata AS, Japan.  On 30 October 1968, he was reassigned to Det

            2, 6994th Security Squadron, Pleiku AB, Vietnam.

 

            SSgt Dorsey was posthumously promoted to the grade of Staff Sergeant 1 June 1969.  His

            awards and decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart

            (Posthumously), Air Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal.

 

            SSgt Dorsey was survived by his father and brother.  On 11 November 1987, the 301st

            Squadron, Misawa AB, Japan, named its Permanent Capability Facility

            Dorsey Memorial Hall in honor of SSGT Dorsey.

Gravestone at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery , St. Louis, Mo. for EC-47 crew lost

                 5 February 1969. Crewmembers were initially listed as Missing In Action.  Aircraft

                 wreckage was located in May 1969 and remains found at the crash site were skeletal and

                 commingled.  Air Force identification specialists were unable to determine that they had

                 a composite of ten individuals and were unable to identify any of the remains.  On 9

                 October 1969, the crew's status was changed to Killed in Action.  The crew's remains

                 were subsequently laid to rest in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
